Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Tickets Available

Monday, June 30th, 2008
Gen Wright asked:

The Pittsburgh Pirates are members of the National League Central Division in Major League Baseball. Based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Pirates? roots could be traced as far back as 1876 when teams in the area played without any affiliations to any organized league. The club has moved on from such beginnings to become one of the storied teams in baseball and is owner of five World Series championships. They are currently being handled by John Russell and play their home games at the PNC Park.

Important moments and accomplishments

The period from 1901-1903 was the time when the Pirates dominated the National League. They, however, lost the first modern World Series to the Boston Red Sox in 1903. But the Pirates never stopped improving and dominating until finally reaching the summit in 1909 when they won their first-ever World Series title, beating the Detroit Tigers in seven games.

The club reached nirvana once again in 1925 when they dispatched the Washington Senators in the Fall Classic in come-from-behind fashion, bucking a 3-1 deficit. The Pirates tried to duplicate the feat in 1927 but was stopped by the New York Yankees.

It took a while before Pittsburgh once again reached the apex of success. In 1960, bannered by Roberto Clemente, **** Groat, Bill Mazeroski and pitchers Vern Law, Bob Friend and Elroy Face, the Pirates exacted payback on the Yankees, pulling the rags from under New York in Game Seven. The 1960 team was also special as the team had eight representatives in the All-Star Game. The team had roller-coaster campaigns after their 1960 triumph.

The ?70s proved to be a banner period for the Pirates. They opened the decade by winning their first of five division titles over the next seven years (1970, 1971, 1972, 1974 and 1975). In ?71, they claimed their fourth World Series title. Tragedy struck the squad in 1972 when star hitter Clemente died in a plane crash while delivering relief goods to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. The Pirates closed out the decade by winning their last of five titles in 1979, beating the Baltimore Orioles in seven games. The year also saw the Pirates sweep all the available MVP awards — All-Star MVP was Dave Parker; NLCS, World Series and NL MVP was Willie Stargell. Stargell shared the NL MVP with Keith Hernandez of the Cardinals.

In 2001, the Pirates moved to a new stadium, PNC Park, which is widely hailed as the best park in the Majors.

The 2008 season saw the team make several player trades that sent veterans to other teams for fresh talents, among them left fielder Xavier Nady and pitcher D?so Mart?o the New York Yankees in return for Jose Tabata, Ross Ohlendorf, Dan McCutchen, and Jeff Karstens. Jason Bay was traded to the Boston Red Sox in a three-team deal that sent Manny Ram?z to the Los Angeles Dodgers and Andy LaRoche and Bryan Morris to the Pirates from the Dodgers and Brandon Moss and Craig Hansen to the Pirates from the Red Sox.

Pittsburgh Pirates current news

With its pitching staff among the league?s worst in much of the statistical areas in the 2008 season, the Pirates have hired Joe Kerrigan as pitching coach to replace Jeff Andrews, who was with the club for only a year. Kerrigan served the Yankees as bullpen coach from 2006-2007. Prior to that he was part the Philadelphia Phillies pitching staff (2003-04) and the Red Sox (1997-2001). While with Boston, Kerrigan?s pitching crew compiled a record of 823-687. The Pirates hope that with Kerrigan?s experience and teaching skills, he?ll be able to help improve their pitching staff which compiled a Major League-low 33 wins (starting staff) and a National League-worst 5.36 ERA.

On rebuilding mode once again following the departure of veteran players, the Pirates franchise maybe in for new challenges. But as all good things must start somewhere, Pittsburgh fans could only expect things to get better for their favorite team.

Baseball Infielder Gloves - Features and Selection

Scott Peters asked:

A well known sports site recounts the following, “Shea Stadium. Oct. 28, 1986. Red Sox vs. Mets, World Series, Game 6. Red Sox up three games to two, and lead 5-3 with two out in the bottom of the 10th. Boston fans anxiously await their first World Series title since 1918. Then, disaster: three Mets singles and a Bob Stanley wild pitch tie the game at 5-5. Mookie Wilson hits a soft grounder to Bill Buckner at first, and the ball goes through his legs, allowing Ray Knight to score the winning run. “I can’t remember the last time I missed a ground ball,” said Buckner. “I guess I’ll remember that one.” So will Boston fans. The Mets went on to win Game 7 and the Series, and Red Sox rooters are still reeling … and waiting.”

Fans and players remember cringe worthy moments like this and wonder what went wrong. And we propose a simple explanation. The guy didn’t have the right equipment.

That’s where Akadema comes in. Known as being “on the cutting edge of sports technology,” and backed by Hall of Famers galore, Akadema knows baseball. And when you are ready to choose a glove, choose them. How do you find the glove that is right for you? It is easier than it looks despite the wide selection and variety out on the market right now.

The first thing to ask yourself, is what position will you be playing? Are you known on your team as the star of just one, or will you be rotating through them all? As the game has evolved, so has the merchandise. There are now gloves for all positions, not just first basemen and pitchers anymore. It is important to go to a reputable dealer like Akadema to make sure that you get the right size and fit for you.

Secondly you should consider the web of the glove. There is only one thing that really matters when it comes to this component. Can you see through it? This will help you to be functional and rid you of unnecessary dirt and other interferences during the game. Webs that are solid work best if you need a sun shield for fly balls.

Next think about what works better for you – an open back or closed back. Just like the web, this comes down to personal choice and comfort. If you tend to overheat out there on the field, an open back will keep you a little cooler, while also offering you options such as an adjustable wrist strap. Closed backs are a little more solid and offer less breathing room and yet more support.

Akadema has the advice of big hitters such as Bob Feller and Ozzie Smith behind them to assure you that when choosing the web and backing of your glove, it is up to personal preference. Whatever makes you play better and feel more comfortable and competent is the glove for you. And as the choice glove of over 600 colleges and universities, the future of the Major Leagues seem to be backing Akadema as well!

It’s important to also realize that both millionaires and future ones have not lost sight of the importance of a dollar. So join the wise players that know that Akadema gives great quality for a smaller price than the major labels do. You won’t be compromising with Akadema, you will just be agreeing with the pros.

Red Sox vs. Marlins March 6th Game Summary

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008
Scott Peters asked:

The Boston Red Sox swept the Florida Marlins Tuesday March 6th in Jupiter, Florida. The score was tied in the ninth 6 to 6 making extra innings necessary. Boston did not let the Marlins score at all in the 10th bringing the final score 14 to 6, Boston. First baseman gloves had to be on fire with all of these outs against Florida!

Enough can not be said about Daisuke Matsuaka, throwing a fastball estimated at 91-93 MPH. He threw a total of 47 pitches, 31 strikes reaching a low speed of only 71 MPH. Matsuaka threw a curveball of 74-77 MPH, a change-up of 76-78 MPH and a slider of 81-82 MPH. He was replaced with Joel Pinero in the 4th who prevented Florida from scoring the entire inning. Manny Delcarmen was not as lucky as the two pitchers before him having Ramirez score a home run for the Marlins in the 5th bringing the score to 2-1. Competing for the 5th rotation spot, Yusmeiro Petit came to the mound for the Marlins. Petit pitched for 3 innings getting with no walks, 1 hit and 5 strikes. Next in the 4th pitching was Wes Obermueller. Wes got a 1 walk and 2 hits total with a run in the 4th. Felix Rodriguez came to the mound in the 7th, getting 2 runs.

The Red Sox came back in the extra inning of this game scoring 8 runs in the 10th. Joe McEwing, Jacoby Elisbury and Bobby Scales all hit RBI singles with McEwing scoring another RBI single in the 9th. Ed Rogers hit a single in the 7th but later on in the 8th was hit by a pitch with the bases full. Kerry Robinson scored a double in that inning and made the 1st hit of the night for the Sox in the 4th inning. Brandon Moss had an RBI double in the 8th and Jeff Bailey a 2 run double. Jason Varitek scored from the 2nd in the 4th with the help of Dustin Pedroia hitting an infield single. Chad Spann in the 9th with 2 outs hit an RBI single tying up the score to go into extra innings.

The Florida Marlins had trouble scoring at the plate in the 10th leading to their loss to the Red Sox. Dan Uggla was the first Major League batter to hit a single against Matsuaka in the 1st inning. John Gall also hit a double off of Daisuke, also known as the ‘Japanese Sensation’, with runners at 2nd and 3rd. Hanley Ramirez managed to get a 2 run homer in the 5th but was not able to get his hard liner past Matsuaka in the 3rd, stopping him from getting a single. Brett Carroll hit an RBI single in the 8th and Alejandro De Aza scored with a 2-out RBI double in the 9th. Robert Andino complimented that with a 2 run double in the ninth.

All in all, a solid outing by the Red Sox Matsuaka and some timely hitting propelled them to victory!
