Pedroia - the 40 Million Boston Red Sox Asset

Monday, August 31st, 2009
John asked:

Long-term security is definitely not something you would expect being offered, especially in the MLB, where it is an absolute chaos when it comes to judging players by their performance. With this being said, you would find one player making a difference big time - Dusting Pedroia!

In all of two seasons, Pedroia has impressed the Boston Red Sox management that the Boston Red Sox have already offered him the golden handshake. The only difference here is that Pedroia is offered the handshake by the Boston Red Sox and also asked him to stay with them. How is that for a deal?
___________________________________________________________________

On Wednesday, the Boston Red Sox and Pedroia reached a deal that is sure to set enough tongues wagging. Sample this for a deal - Six years of stay with the Boston Red Sox for a total contract value of $40.5 Million. Add this to the fact that the deal has an add-on of $11 Million for a seventh year stay? A total deal value of about $50 Million and a security of 7 years, irrespective of performance! How is that for security?

Boston Red Sox seem to be absolutely thrilled at this investment. Clearly, they are looking at it from only one angle - If a player can impress in his first two seasons at the MLB, and that in a competitive arena, he surely has something in him. Investing in him for a long term would thus not seem to be a bad strategy after all.  The only catch though is - What if the player fails to meet the expectations for some time in a row?

This seems to be one voice of the critics of this decision of Boston Red Sox. Clearly, they seem to be non-plussed about the fact that the management of Boston Red Sox can predict a player’s performance over the next some years. What if the player suffers from injury during this time? What if the player’s performance dips with time? These questions definitely would have been uncomfortable ones for Boston Red Sox management to answer them!

But I guess all the thinking would have gone back to the drawing room when the management of Boston Red Sox would take off the score sheets and read them. Clearly they could not afford their MVP to move anywhere else in any state. In such a backdrop, you would find the decision of Boston Red Sox vindicated.

And well, as we prepare for another season of MLB, everyone is closely watching the Boston Red Sox games with great interest. People want to know if the deal has created some kind of distraction in Pedroia. Is he as equal minded as before? Will he be able to roll on match winning performances time and again?

For now, these questions seem to be unanswered but one thing is for sure. You cannot rule out 100% effort and perspiration into Pedroia’s efforts.

What will happen to Red Sox/Yankees fans if a salary cap is ever put in place?

seahawksblitz8 asked:

Will they bandwagon from team to team or stay loyal? My guess is that at least half of all Yankees fans are bandwagoneers, almost as bad for the Red Sox.

I mean you look at these people and they are so accustomed to winning that it’s going to be a rude awakening.

Thoughts?

Looking Back at the Cincinnati Reds Stockings

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009
Rick Grantham asked:

The Cincinnati Red Stockings is the very first team of baseball professionals. This means that all members of the club were paid players. The club has major influences on how baseball is today. The popularity of the team boomed from the first time they played and won in 1869. After winning their first game over Mansfield Independents, they set off to create the longest winning streak in the history of baseball. They won 130 games straight, until the Brooklyn Atlantics defeated them in 1870.

The fame of the team has made its mark in the sport that gave birth to them. There were nicknames for players, which is also evident to baseball players of our generation. They also made an impact to the fashion of baseball uniforms, creating the color that some teams derive their name from, like the Boston Red Sox.

There were few sighting of the Red Stockings After 1870. They fully resurfaced in 1876, as one of the first eight teams in the National League. However, the team name is probably the closest it can get to the original team. The team struggled to win games. They ranked last in two consecutive years.

However, they were not about to give up. They changed their name to Cincinnati Reds. This proved to be a good thing because of the good season they played in 1878 to 1879. This did not continue though. Their violation of the rules of the association led to their expulsion from the league in 1880. The league was not happy about their distribution of beers to fans during games. The team also declined to stop playing on Sundays, adding more reason for the expulsion.

The incident did not stop the team from playing baseball though. They played for the newly founded league American Association. It commenced in 1882. During the first year of the league, the Reds dominated. They slowly slipped after a while because of the competition in the league. They bounced back and have been trailing the St. Louis Brown for some time.

They also went through a tough time. Their attempts to go back to the top were challenging. Just when they thought things would get better after a strong start in 1888, they have to endure yet another obstacle. One of their star players, Bid McPhee suffered from a leg injury and winning was difficult without him in the field.

Although there were hopes of the team getting back on their knees, the team only finished fourth in their final game under the roof of the American Association. The Cincinnati Reds went back to the National League in 1990 and stayed.

The team has definitely contributed a lot to the evolution of the sport. Being the first team to have all professional players and having a 130-winning streak under their belt are reasons enough to remember the team in a special kind of way. Although the players made bad choices and struggled to bring back their stature, they have raised the standard of the sport and of the league in general.

Red Sox **** - Yankee Stadium Curse Reversed

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009
RedStormProduction asked:

Construction workers at the new Yankee Stadium unearthed a David Ortiz jersey that was buried at the stadium’s foundation by a worker who is a die-hard Boston Red Sox fan. His Motive: To lay a curse on the Yankees and the new stadium. The worker, hired by Turner Construction, worked at the new stadium for only a day, but was able to gain access to the Yankees new locker room under construction, where he was able to bury the jersey in concrete. In the end however; Yankee fans had the last …
