Babe Ruth Baseball Cards, Still A Good Investment?

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008
Veronica Davis asked:
___________________________________________________________________

The legend of **** Ruth is still just as much alive today than it was during his reign of baseball in the early 1900’s. There isn’t a baseball fanatic, or baseball cards collector in the world that would not want to get their hands on an official **** Ruth baseball card, and he continues to have die-hard fans that weren’t even thought of being born when he was hitting home runs.

Babe Ruth, born in Baltimore Maryland was actually named George Herman Ruth Jr., but became known by many names including The Great Bambino, The Home Run King, and The Sultan of Swat. His record speaks for itself with 714 home runs which remained unbeatable by baseball players to follow for an astounding 39 years. He was born to Kate Schamberger-Ruth and George Herman Ruth, Sr., but did not live out his entire childhood with them. They worked long hours, and when **** Ruth was seven years old his father took him to St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys and gave them custody of him. There, he didn’t conform well to their rigid environment. Family visiting days were not even highlights he could look forward to because his family didn’t come to visit.

As you can see, his father was not to be thanked for enhancing his then, unreal baseball abilities. The man who has the right to that claim is Brother Matthias of the St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys, who eventually became a father figure of sorts. He played on the school’s baseball team, starting out as a catcher, and then given the chance to play the pitcher’s position. His talent was evident. **** Ruth was signed to the Baltimore Orioles at the age of 19 by their owner, Jack Dunn. It was during this time that he obtained the nick name Babe, because people viewed him as “Jack’s newest babe”… Jack Dunn had the reputation as a top scout at that time. The Orioles were a Boston Red Sox minor league team, but Ruth’s contract was bought out by the Red Sox after playing on the Orioles for only five months. He was now playing with the big boys in the major league.

Babe Ruth is, of course, mostly known for his amazing batting talent. However, for the first six years on the Boston Red Sox he was a pitcher. He set unbelievable records, in both pitching and batting positions in the years to follow. Good times rolled for the Red Sox until 1919, when Harry Frazee became the new owner of the team and chose to sell Ruth to the Ney York Yankees. What did he get in return for handing over the legend in this transaction? Ruth was sold for $100,000 and a $350,000 loan that Frazee in turn used to finance his Broadway productions dream.

It was this turn of events that led to the “Curse of the Bambino”. The Yankees experienced tremendous victories, while the Red Sox wouldn’t earn a World Series title again until many years later in 2004. The legend of **** Ruth will always carry on, and the Curse will always be felt in the heart of Red Sox fans. Therefore, **** Ruth baseball cards will always be highly sought after.

The Red Sox Are Off to a Great Start

Monday, September 15th, 2008
Jason Oconnor asked:

There’s nothing quite like being part of Red Sox Nation, especially this season. So far this season, they are dominating their division. Although the Boston Red Sox have dropped a couple of games to Oakland in the last few days, and more than their fair share to the Yankees, they are still definitely one of the best teams in the MLB this year for many reasons.

It’s still early in the baseball season, and of course the Sox have started off strong and fizzled by the end in the past. But they are looking very strong and they have a great chance of making it far into the playoffs, and dare I say, to the World Series.

By looking at their performance so far this season, it’s obvious there is something special going on. They are ten games ahead of any other team in the American League East and have shown well against every team they have played against. They have one of the best records in baseball currently and will surely be a contender for the 2007 World Series.

The Red Sox pitching is excellent this year, led by Curt Shilling. Shilling has an Earned Run Average of 3.91 this season and has only thrown eighty-nine hits in seventy-six innings pitched. Josh Beckett is also doing fantastic this season with an ERA of only 2.95 and only fifty-one hits in sixty-four innings pitched.

Rounding out the Red Sox starting pitches are Daisuke Matsuzaka, Tim Wakefield, and Julian Tavarez, each with strong performances this season. And Lester is due to come back to the rotation soon, which will only make the rotation even stronger.

They also have great relievers and closers as well. Hideki Okajima has excellent so far and has an Earned Run Average of only 1.27. Rounding out the bullpen are Jonathan Papelbon, Brendan Donnelly, J.C. Romero, and Joel Pineiro. The quality of the Red Sox pitching has made it very hard to score against them and has helped neutralize some of the strong offenses they have faced.
___________________________________________________________________
Pitching wins games and gets teams to the post season. A team’s defense is vital for wins. So far this season, the Sox pitching is foing its job well.

The Red Sox also have a very good offensive side led by third baseman Mike Lowell and designated hitter David Ortiz. Mike Lowell and David Ortiz have slugging percentages above .500 and batting averages of .332 and .333 respectively. However, Lowell and Ortiz are not the only forces behind the plate.

Manny Ramirez has a batting average of .286 along with eight home runs and thirty-two runs batted in. Kevin Youkilis has a batting average of .346 with seventy-three hits, eight home runs, and thirty-one runs batted in.

Dustin Pedroia has been on fire lately offensively as well. And one of the most consistent players who seems to always get his bat on the ball is Kevin Youkalis. If Manny Ramirez starts to bat the way we all know he can, he’ll be an even more serious weapon in the lineup. In the past, Ramirez has heated up as the season progressed, so I expect his batting average to continually improve.

The Red Sox have had some hiccups along the way and have lost some games this season they were expected to win. The have lost to the New York Yankees several times this season despite this being one of the worst seasons in recent Yankee history. The Sox really don’t have any superstars on the team. However, the are playing play excellent technical baseball and work well as a team. They are always doing what it takes to win and playing smart baseball.

The Boston Red Sox are a sure bet to win their division as they are leading the Blue Jays, Yankees, Orioles, and D-Rays by 10 games or more. However, they do have some competition in other MLB divisions. The Angels, Brewers, Dodgers, Padres, and Mets are all having great seasons as well and could pose a threat to the Red Sox in the post season. However, the Sox have one of the most solid and consistent teams in the MLB this year and they have a great chance of holding together all the way to October.

It’s true that the Sox have struggled so far this year with the Yankees and more recently, the Athletics, but by the end of the season, they will have an excellent chance of winning the AL Pennant. Look for them to be the team to beat in the post season.

History of the Boston Red Sox

Friday, August 29th, 2008
Rick Grantham asked:

The history of the Boston Red Sox is rich with lore. The are the reigning 2007 World Series Champions and this came after a very long dry spell with no World Series wins. The Boston Red Sox are one of the oldest teams in the league and have made their team home since 1912 at Fenway Park, sometimes called “The Fens”.

This history of the Boston Red Sox name comes from the uniform feature of red around the sock area of the uniform. No matter which uniform the team is wearing, home or away or an alternate - the sock area is always red.
___________________________________________________________________

The Boston Red Sox club was actually formed in 1901, they were the team to beat and beat they did of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first World Series in 1903. They went on to win four more championships by 1918, and then went into one of the longest periods without a win in baseball history. Many people attributed their inability to win to the “Curse of the Bambino” that was said to have been caused by the trade of **** Ruth to the New York Yankees in 1920. That curse was reversed in 2004, when the Boston Red Sox finally won and brought home their sixth World

Series Championship.

The late 1920’s to early 1930’s were not a good time for the Boston Red Sox, who managed to average over 100 loses in a season. In 1933, the luck of the team began looking up when Tom Yawkey bought the Red Sox and acquired some strong players. These wise player additions paid off and the Red Sox were again strong competitors in the League.

For the next 30 years, the Boston Red Sox would continue their pursuit of the World Series win just falling short. Ted Williams, considered one of the greatest hitters of all time lent his talents to the time and some people started calling the team “The TedSox”. Ted went on to write a book, “The Science of Hitting” that is still used to present day by up and coming baseball players.

The 1960’s didn’t start well for the Boston Red Sox, however 1967 brought a furious and exciting pennant race. The 1970’s brought a new uniform look when the team began to wear a red hat with a navy blue B and a navy blue brim. The new look didn’t help the team win and they never

finished higher than second in their division.

After longtime owner Tom Yawkey passed away in 1976, his wife Jean oversaw control of the Boston Red Sox until her own passing 1992. The Boston Red Sox never won a single world series in the longtime ownership of the Yawkey’s.

In 2004, the team made it to another world series and this one started poorly with injured players and closely scored games. However, in their series match up again the Cardinals, the Boston Red Sox broke the “Curse of the Bambino” and brought home a world series back to Boston. A surreal touch many people considered an omen of good luck was the total lunar eclipse that occurred during game 4. The moon was colored red over Busch Stadium and the Red Sox won the game about 10 minutes before the eclipse ended.

Just to prove the “Curse of the Bambino” was just another part of Boston Red Sox history, the team went on to win the 2007 World Series against the Colorado Rockies. Ensuring the Boston Red Sox continued reputation as one of the greatest teams in MLB history.

The Miracle of the 2004 Boston Red Sox

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008
anonymous asked:

Two years later, in 1920, the RedSox sold **** Ruth to the New York Yankees and the curse of The Bambino was born. Boston would not win another World Series until 2004.

The 2004 season was magical for BoSox players and fans. It featured star players such as David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Johnny Damon, Curt Schilling, and Pedro Martinez. It was a run unlike any other in history.

In the years preceding 2004, the Boston Red Sox had come close to reaching the World Series. In fact, the previous season, in 2003, the Sox were nearly defeated by the eventual champion New York Yankees in the AL Championship Series.

It looked like they were going to fall again to the Yankees in the 2004 AL Championship Series. After sweeping the Anaheim Angels in the Divisional Playoff Series, the Sox found themselves down three games to none. The curse was alive and well and only a miracle would save the 2004 season.

The Yankees had a chance to sweep the Sox in Game Four that was played on Boston’s Fenway Park. It looked like the Yankees were going to do just that when they carried a one run lead into the bottom of the ninth.

The Red Sox managed to tie the game and send it to extra innings. Three innings later, in the bottom of the twelfth, David Ortiz won the game when he hit a two run home run.

The next night David Ortiz would again play the hero. Boston had managed to tie the game again, this time in the bottom of the eighth. Then in the bottom of the fourteenth inning, Ortiz ended the longest game in American League Championship Series history with a walk-off single.

The next game, played in Yankee Stadium, seemed to be a must win for the Yankees. With their two extra innings wins, the Red Sox had begun to turn the tide of momentum in their favor.

The RedSox sent their ace pitcher, Curt Schilling, to the mound. The Sox took control of the game in the top of the fourth when they scored four runs. They held on and won the game four to two.

The series was all but over and so was the Curse of the Bambino. All that was left was for the Bo-Sox to actually play game seven.

Boston scored eight runs in the first four innings and rolled to a ten to three win. They were heading to the World Series to play the St. Louis Cardinals.

Boston rode their wave of success and swept the Cardinals in four games. Their winning streak of eight straight games set a record. The miracle was complete, the curse was broken, and the Boston RedSox of 2004 were World Series Champions.

Curious About The Weekly Salary Of The Boston Red Sox?

Friday, August 8th, 2008
BooYah McGwire asked:

You love the Boston Red Sox, go to all the games you can and catch the others on television whenever you can. In your quest for knowledge about the Boston Red Sox, did you ever wonder about the weekly salary of the Boston Red Sox?

When the Boston Red Sox got their start in 1912, they played Fenway Park and continue to do so to the present day. There is no data available for the players’ 1912 weekly salaries but in 1913 they averaged $67.00 a week with the exception of the player, Tris Speaker that averaged $302.00 per week according to the MLB Baseball Almanac.

Fast forward to the great stock market crash of 1929 and the Great Depression of the 1930’s and into World War II the mid-1940’s average weekly salaries of the Boston Red Sox propelled towards $960.00 per week for players like Ted Williams and the other team members averaged around $300.00 to $400.00 per week.

The 1950’s really heralded in the golden age of baseball with most notably Ted Williams salary boosting to $2403.00 per week in the 1950 season and by the end of the 1950’s the Boston Red Sox Weekly Salaries were still among one of the best paid teams in the league with their star players making around $2500 per week and other players making around the $500.00 per week range.

In the 1960’s the salaries started to go up for the most well-known and promoted players while the “regular” weekly salary of the average Boston Red Sox player remained woefully lower in comparison to their star players.

In the present, it’s not uncommon for professional athletes to command salaries in the millions upon signing with a team. The Boston Red Sox weekly salaries of today far surpass the humble beginnings of the original players around the turn of last century. Some of the highlights for the 2007 Boston Red Sox (that’s the most current salary information available) is Manny Ramirez comes in as the highest paid player with a weekly salary topping around $327,000. The entertainingly named Coco Crisp is around $73,000 per week. As of the 2007 report, the lowest paid Boston Red Sox team member was Dustin Pedroia at $7300.00 per week. The

total 2007 team salary was $143,523,714.00.

The 2008 opening day totals are below.

Tickets to see the Boston Red Sox—Go to Toronto!

Friday, August 1st, 2008
Paul Mroczka asked:

With over 200 straight sellouts and the diminutive Fenway Park (capacity 36,298) as their home, the Boston Red Sox are one of the hottest tickets in Major League baseball (MLB). If you are part of Red Sox Nation, the innumerable fans who live and die by each pitch and swing of the bat, and can’t get through the turnstiles of the home park, there is an alternative-road trip!

Many fans have found it to be fairly economical to take a

mini-vacation on the weekend or use a week’s worth of summer leave and follow the team to opponent stadiums. Red Sox players have noted that they get a lot of support everywhere they go, and although many of those people are transplants from New England or natives of that particular region who love their Sox Red, others are part of a growing group of fans from the Boston area who can’t get enough of their team in the home setting.

Some away venues, such as Yankee Stadium and Citizens

Bank Park in Philadelphia are tough tickets to get, but there are many stadiums where good seats are still available. Here are a few places you may want to go to help make the away team feel like they are at home.

Comerica Park, Detroit

Comerica Park is the home of the Detroit Tigers and it is

one of those venues that, with everything else it offers, also seems to have a ball game going on somewhere. If you’re used to Fenway and you’ve never been to a game at a place like Comerica, you may be overwhelmed by the amenities, spaciousness and opportunities.

The park is in the center of an urban village that includes

shops, restaurants, offices and many other features. Yes, there is a Ferris wheel and a pedestrian museum that goes around the main concourse. Other attractions in the area include various casinos and the Henry Ford Museum.

The Tigers have not had a good team in a long time and

that means you can get fine seats for just about any game. Outfield boxes at $25 a seat are not difficult to get if you want to go and see the Red Sox.

Rogers Centre, Toronto

The Blue Jays have certainly upgraded their team but great

seats are still relatively easy to get. The Rogers Centre has a retractable roof, the J Force (a team of Hip Hop and Break Dancers performing for fans), a season-long highest speed pitching cage contest and a 50/50 drawing every Saturday.

If you’re hoping to sing the national anthem at the Rogers

Centre, please note that your audition tape must contain the American and then the Canadian national anthems. Be sure to include contact information with your CD or tape and once you send it in don’t contact them; they’ll call you if they’re interested.

You can buy exceptional field box tickets between home

and first for around $42. Remember that hockey is king in Canada and baseball is not this country’s national pastime. So become an international traveler, enjoy one of the most beautiful cities in North America, and catch a three-game series in an open-air ballpark where there’s never a rainout.

Tropicana Field, Tampa Bay

The Trop has plenty of great, cheap seats all season long.

It’s called ¡°the ballpark of the 21st century,¡± and about 10 years ago the venue underwent an $85 million renovation. Like many newer parks, it has a primary concourse-Centerfield Street-that features various specialty shops and restaurants. Included in the area, where you can still watch the game, is MLB’s first in-stadium cigar bar-the Cuesta-Rey Cigar Bar.

The park is under a dome and, unlike any other domed field

presently in the majors, has artificial turf and all dirt base paths. All other in-door facilities have only areas around the bases with dirt and then artificial turf on the rest of the running area.

Forty-seven dollars will get you a seat on the field level of

the Trop. Not only will you get to see two teams that have developed a lot of bad blood between them, but you’ll get to hear the Tampa Bay Heckler, Robert Szasz, also know as ¡°The loud guy.¡±

Szasz goes to every home game dressed in a Devil Rays

shirt and hat and loudly heckles the visiting team, usually hurling his abuse at one player. He’s loud (you can hear him on radio and television casts), but he’s also clean. If you’re not up for a close encounter with Szasz and his booming voice, don’t sit near home plate.

McAfee Coliseum, Oakland

Go west, young fan, go west! If you’re California

Dreaming, then Oakland may be the perfect place for you to catch your Sox. McAfee Coliseum is a multi-use stadium with 50,000 seats! Tailgating is permitted outside the park, something you can’t imagine doing around Fenway.

For a west coast venue, the stadium seems to have a rich

history, including claiming to be the first stadium where ¡°The Wave¡± was first performed on October 15, 1981. Fenway fans, which may be the only group that still performs The Wave, may find a pilgrimage to the site a life-changing experience (then again, maybe not). The bay area, including San Francisco, is easily accessible, making this a great vacation trip.

Oakland teams are built on pitching and fielding. You

should see some fine ballgames at McAfee Park, the home of the game changing, progressive GM Billy Bean and Money Ball. You won’t be sitting at field level but for $40 a pop you’ll be able to look down on the game from far above.

Turner Field, Atlanta

Want to see one of the best teams in the American League

take on one of the best clubs in the Senior Circuit? You won’t get prime seats like you will in Toronto or Tampa Bay, but you will find tickets available for Inter-league play between Boston and Atlanta.

At Turner Field the Braves claim that there are 101 things

to do, including watching a ball game! Other things you can indulge in include making your own baseball bat (think ¡°The Natural¡±), engaging in the non-P.C. ¡°Chop Rally,¡± and taking a picture with Scooby Doo. (Why would anyone want to watch Andruw Jones play?) The venue also contains a very fine baseball museum.

The city of Atlanta possesses a rich cultural heritage,

historic sites and the CNN Center, which includes the news giant, a shopping mall, convention center and hotel.

For $15 you can find a seat in the upper deck and enjoy a

bird’s eye view of the BoSox battle with Atlanta. This is baseball at its best, with your home team taking on one of the best home teams in all of baseball.

If you are considering a short jaunt or a longer excursion to

one or more of these out-of-town settings, be sure to buy tickets ahead of time. Presently, it’s fairly easy to purchase seats for most of these venues, with games that are scheduled later in the season being plentiful.

It’s baseball season-get away, enjoy a different city, and

spread the spirit of Red Sox Nation across the land. With Big Papi, Manny, Schill and Tech taking the field, you’ll feel right at home and so will they.

2007 Mlb Preview: The Boston Red Sox

Monday, July 14th, 2008
Johnny Moon asked:

The 2007 lineup for the Boston Red Sox looks pretty questionable thus far. Most of Boston’s outfield was down for a good deal of the season, including their newest outfielder, J. D. Drew, who is notorious for his health issues. Due to these things and more, this season will probably be pretty rough for the Red Sox.

Jason Varitek is 35 and fading fast toward retirement. His defense is dropping, and his OPS+ plummeted an entire 40 points. The injury to his knee didn’t help him over the summer either. However, Varitek should still show some resilience, even though his reign as the best offensive catcher is over.

Many people were impressed with the 91 walks that first baseman Kevin Youkilis drew last year and fans are waiting for more of the same. Though not playing at home, Fenway Park, he should still play a good game. Dustin Pedroia finally has a chance to shine this season. Though he hasn’t performed well when given his chance, some serious improvements should come from him this year. Lowell is commonly regarded as a wizard with a glove-as long as the ball is within range. Lowell catches a good amount of balls that come into his zone, but lacks in range. He also has a tendency to fall off towards the last half of the season.

Julio Lugo, Bostons’ starting shortstop for 2007, is in a really good position for this year. This is argued greatly, but here is why is perfect for the position: during his career at Fenway Park, he had a career OPS of .880; and, he can steal about 25 bases, play solid defense, and score an OPS of over .800. Hence his perfect placement as shortstop. There isn’t too much to say about the Red Sox’s designated hitter. David Ortiz is one of the best hitters in all of baseball and the Red Sox should be able to depend on him for many runs.

The pitching rotation will go as follows; Curt Schilling, Josh Becket, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Jonathon Papelbon, and Tim Wakefield. Schilling is prospective for this year, as well as Wakefield is. Papelbon suffered a recent shoulder injury, and pitching 120 more innings than he did last year isn’t going to treat that injury any good.

The projected closers for this year are pretty shady looking. Last season, Donnelly made his highest ERA, and worst K/BB ratio of his career. Pinieiro has been no better in the past two years, so the bullpen could get pretty ugly this year.

The biggest thing that will affect Boston the most this year is the bullpen. It will probably cost them their shot at the division. They don’t have good closing players, and Delcarmen and Hansen are clearly not ready for the big leagues, so Boston is left pretty open ended at this point.

Bobby Brister asked:

Everybody knows who **** Ruth is. His name is always equated to baseball. This person had remarkable statistics in this sport, garnering 174 homeruns from 1914-1935.He ranks third among the players with homeruns made. Hank Aaron broke the record after 1976 but never the less broke this record was undefeated for a long time.

Babe Ruth played for three different teams in his whole career. He played for the longest time with the New York Yankees as an outfielder. His performance drastically soared and the number of home runs he can make can even out score the total performance of a team. When he stands on the plate, everybody expects a homerun. He practically led this team to their victories. Without him, the team would be paralyzed. However, Ruth did not play MLB smoothly. He had his own episodes of rebellious acts that caused him suspensions and ejections from the court. Nevertheless, he makes a comeback and every time he finishes a season, he would always perform better.

This left-handed baseball phenomenon was one of the players sold out by his previous team. He played as one of the many talented pitchers of the Boston Red Sox. He was sold out because he demanded a raise in salary and they could not give it to him. However, there are certain matters that led to the conclusion that the real reason for his sellout was for the owner of the team to finance a theatrical Broadway show. Unfortunately, Frazee, the owner, made the worst decision in his entire life. Red Sox never won a World Series from the time they let go of **** Ruth.

The team can make it to the finals but they can never get the title. For years until 2004, the curse existed. Although, people who believed in it might sound crazy or superstitious for some, it is just a lousy excuse to make for not making to the number one spot, there were several Championship Matches cited from 1946-2003 that could support evidences of the curse. If you are a non-believer, probably it was just coincidence.

The team had a constant struggle to break the curse. Even the fans were collaborating in performing several rituals in the hope that losing streak would just go away. When 2004 came, the curse was broken when they grabbed their first World Series title since its effect. According to USA today, when they won, their fans left various items on the grave of **** Ruth. It seems that with all of the constant struggle that the Boston Red Sox team and fans put to break the curse, it all paid off and has gone away. It was further evidenced by their repeated victory as World Series Champions in 2007. They had a 4-0 win against the Colorado Rockies.

Despite the curse that everyone was talking about, **** Ruth remained an icon to baseball. He became a Hall of Famer. He deservingly called as one of the greatest baseball players of all times and that selling him out might be a good idea after all.
